How to choose furniture

In any decoration process, either a zero or a draft reform is needed to choose the furniture that will be used.

The furniture is the soul of the room, we help create the style, organizing space, allow us a comfortable life, are part of our daily activities and take part in our relationship with others.

Choosing furniture can be tricky. As part of our professional activity we know that the greatest difficulty is that our customers have the choice and distribution of furniture.

Inadequate furniture can harm a good decoration. By contrast, a well chosen enhances furniture and decoration defines the style.

When it comes to reform, the question arises of what furniture we will use existing ones and others which must be replaced or renewed. Eventually, assess what furniture will keep, what to delete and what furniture will be those who need to buy. Know what can be recycled furniture, reupholster or update with a little investment, without buying new furniture. Do not take the decision to get rid of furniture to reflect whether renewing it could adapt to the new design.

Choosing furniture requires consideration of a number of practical and aesthetic factors. We will discuss the various factors that influence the decision to choose the furniture. These data will serve both for choosing new furniture as a reference for deciding which existing furniture can be preserved.

1) The cabinet and its Function

The first factor in choosing a cabinet, or to decide if we keep an existing one, it does. The question to ask is: what need furniture? The various activities that take place in a particular room, such as a bedroom, require specific furniture. Even each family has different needs, because they are different activities and people who make them. To define what furniture needed by function we must pay special attention to the following aspects:

The basic furniture for every room

Each room or area of the house has furniture and specific uses. These spaces are organized according to their activities: the dining room is used for eating, is living off the common area or meeting place, the bedroom is for sleeping, etc.. For these activities need some specific furniture.

If you are starting to make their list of furniture, for now start deciding what furniture needs according to their use for each room, for example, certainly requires a bedroom with a bed and a nightstand or bedside table, a dining table with their chairs, etc.

Define personal needs

An environment such as a bedroom, have different needs depending on who uses it. One person will need a single bed and a bedside table. A nursery for two brothers will take two single beds. A fourth marriage requires a double bed and two nightstands.

In addition, each case may include more specific needs. A room for one person may also be formed by a double bed if you are looking for comfort, or if some nights you share the room with the couple. The fourth child for siblings may require two bedside tables if what is needed is greater support area.

In this way you can customize the list of furniture needed for our project. It is important to stop and think about what our needs really are and how would that furniture to make our lives more comfortable.

The complementary furniture

To carry out these activities in our home also need some additional furniture. For example, saving the furniture, which are fundamental to the order of a room, are complementary furniture.

A room may need a large library if we have a good collection of books, or perhaps a desk, a table for the computer or the TV cabinet, depending on the activities performed in that room. In a bedroom, for example, need space for clothing and other items.

2) The size (Size and Shape)

The second factor that we will consider, having defined what furniture we need, will be the size and shape that they have. Both the size and shape of the furniture can be given for practical, visual issues (aesthetic) or space issues.

Practical issues are directly related to its function (see above), but here you must define specifications for each piece of furniture, for example, how will a dresser drawer, how many modules should be the library or how many diners must have the table.

Plastic issues relate to space the integrated design, for example, if the furniture will be straight lines or curves, if the space required high or low furniture, etc. The fluidity and rhythm of the masses in space are plastic considerations about the shape and size of objects. This relationship will be both objects together, as with space.

Obviously, the space determines the size of the furniture and also the distribution of furniture (to space). Always list the furniture before buying space. See if your size is appropriate to the overall design (not too big, not too small). Note also the actual physical space of the room (in one meter cabinet does not come any higher than 1 meter), the space will be around the cabinet (empty space and circulation areas) and furniture in relation to structural elements (height a window or a door size).

3) The cabinet and Style

The next waypoint in the choice of furniture has to do with what we like: the aesthetic. What style of furniture we buy, what color, whether modern or classic, etc. These considerations will be made taking into account the overall style of the project. The furniture, and other decor elements, they will have to be integrated into the style chosen for the room, and these make a significant contribution to achieving the style and visual impact we seek during design.

4) Materials

Finally be defined in which materials are made furniture, as this is essential for life and for proper integration decorative style.

The material is adapted to use

The furniture must be made of a material suited to the use or activity in which to use. There are harder materials, either wood or upholstered, and there are more delicate materials. A lacquered table is a luxury not suitable for a dining room in a family with kids. In this case a hardwood or laminate are the best options. With fabrics could follow suit. A faux leather chair is suitable for heavy use and can be washed, while a chenille is always delicate and suffers more wear and stains.

The material integrates decorative style

Materials also relate directly to the decorative style. The warmth of wood, the modernity of a lacquered or coolness of the marble should be integrated into the overall concept of the project style. The materials and textures speak for themselves. The integration and combination of various materials (including floors, walls, fabrics, curtains, etc..) Will be taken into account in planning the project.

Some Final Thoughts

Generally assumed to choose the furniture is simple. Maybe, choose the furniture that we like can be easy, but that does not guarantee that this cabinet is the one we need. Many of our customers can not see that a cabinet that is liked both aesthetic and practical problems which are not resolved. Therefore, we must take the time to think about what furniture we need, in that size, style and material, before making any investment.

Try to be objective. Observe the place to decorate and evaluate existing furniture, establishing what you need to replace or renew. And then decide what furniture will acquire the light of the points of this report and of course, with a realistic budget adapted to their budget.
